The Lauterbrunnen and the surrounding Lauterbrunnen Valley are among the most impressive natural destinations in Switzerland. Surrounded by steep cliffs, waterfalls and snow-covered mountain peaks, the valley offers a landscape that feels almost unreal.

Located in the heart of the Bernese Oberland, Lauterbrunnen lies between famous alpine destinations such as Wengen, Mürren and Grindelwald. The dramatic scenery attracts visitors from around the world throughout every season of the year.

A Valley of Waterfalls

Lauterbrunnen Valley is often called the “Valley of 72 Waterfalls” — and for good reason. Water cascades down from towering rock faces hundreds of metres above the valley floor, creating one of the most spectacular alpine landscapes in Europe.

The most famous waterfall is the Staubbach Falls, which plunge nearly 300 metres down the cliffs beside the village. Especially after rainfall or during the snowmelt season, the waterfalls become even more impressive.

Another major attraction is the Trümmelbach Falls, a series of glacier waterfalls hidden inside the mountain. Accessible through tunnels and walkways, the falls carry enormous volumes of water from the glaciers above.

Walking through the valley, visitors constantly hear rushing water, cowbells and the sound of mountain trains moving between the villages.

Inspiration for Writers and Artists

The beauty of Lauterbrunnen Valley has inspired writers, artists and travellers for generations.

Perhaps the most famous connection is with J. R. R. Tolkien. During a visit to the region in the early 20th century, Tolkien was deeply impressed by the dramatic cliffs and waterfalls of Lauterbrunnen Valley. Many people believe the landscape later influenced his fictional elven valley of Rivendell in The Lord of the Rings.

The valley also attracted famous literary figures such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who wrote about the Staubbach Falls after visiting the region, and Lord Byron, who was fascinated by the alpine scenery during his travels through Switzerland.

Even today, photographers, filmmakers and artists continue to find inspiration in the valley’s dramatic landscapes.

Hiking and Outdoor Adventures

Lauterbrunnen Valley is one of the best places in Switzerland for outdoor activities and hiking.

Popular hiking routes connect Lauterbrunnen with nearby mountain villages and viewpoints, including:

  • Lauterbrunnen to Wengen

  • Lauterbrunnen to Mürren

  • Grütschalp Panorama Trail

  • Stechelberg Valley Walk

  • Mountain trails around Kleine Scheidegg

The region is also well known for paragliding, climbing and mountain biking.

During summer, green meadows and colourful alpine flowers contrast beautifully with the surrounding glaciers and rock walls. In winter, the valley becomes a peaceful snowy landscape with access to nearby ski resorts.

Traditional Swiss Alpine Atmosphere

Despite being internationally famous, Lauterbrunnen has kept much of its authentic Swiss alpine charm.

Traditional wooden chalets, small cafés and family-run hotels create a relaxed atmosphere that feels far removed from busy modern cities. The nearby mountain villages of Wengen and Mürren, both largely car-free, add even more character to the region.

Visitors often stay several days simply to enjoy the scenery, mountain air and slower pace of life.

Easy Access to the Jungfrau Region

Lauterbrunnen is also one of the main gateways to the Jungfrau Region.

From the village, mountain railways and cable cars provide easy access to famous destinations such as:

  • Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe

  • Kleine Scheidegg

  • Wengen

  • Mürren

  • Schilthorn

  • Grindelwald

Thanks to Switzerland’s excellent railway network, the area is easy to explore without needing a car.
